Hoist & Overhead Crane Inspection FAQ
If you have questions about getting your crane or hoist inspected, you are not alone. OSHA requirements and ASME safety standards can be complex but understanding them is crucial for ensuring crane operation safety, compliance, and efficiency. We’ll do our best to clear up the confusion by providing answers to some of the most common questions we get about inspections.
Does OSHA require overhead cranes to be inspected?
Yes, in addition to initial and daily inspections, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires overhead cranes to be inspected at least annually by a qualified person. However, some overhead cranes require more frequent inspections as explained here.
Who should conduct hoist and crane inspections?
OSHA requires a “competent person” to perform crane inspections, specifying “one who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surrounds or working conditions”. In practicality, this means a professional with experience and training in overhead cranes.
What happens if an overhead crane fails inspection?
Appropriate warning/inspection labels will be affixed to each unit after their satisfactory inspection. Any crane or hoist that fails inspection will be red tagged and your coordinator will be informed. Any repair or deficiency which the inspection reveals and cannot immediately be corrected with the material and/or parts on hand, will be so noted on the inspection reports. It will be at the coordinator’s discretion to remove that unit from service until necessary repairs have been completed. Upon request, we will provide a quotation for any needed repairs.
What is the risk of not inspecting your cranes?
By not inspecting your overhead cranes, there’s a risk that an OSHA inspector would deem your company out of compliance, resulting in fines and penalty fees. Further, by not inspecting cranes, hoists and overhead lifting equipment, an operation risks efficiency of production and, more importantly, the safety of personnel. Aside from safety and OSHA compliance, inspections also limit down time by catching needed repairs before they grow in scope.
Is hoist disassembly required for inspection?
No, disassembly of your hoist isn't necessary for inspection. ASME standards recommend in-place inspections with necessary cover removal for thorough examination. However, depending on what is revealed during the inspection, further investigation may be necessary.
What do hoist inspectors look for when inspecting a hoist?
A hoist inspection should includes checking the hoist's condition, safety labels, load capacity, and all components.
